Reflections on Fr. Gerry Foley RIP

From Br. Conal Thomas:

What sad news indeed.

Thank you Gerry for your unstinting dedication to the cause of Christ

Volumes are written and studied about mission, missionary life in general and about the lives of particular missionaries. Gerry Foley in his person, bearing and life encapsulated all that is good, all that is true, authentic and noble about mission and missionary life. A single visit to him in Barbello, Pokot country told me more than I could ever read or study in literature or lectures, useful as they may be.

Superlatives are inadequate to describe Gerry’s dedicated life of humble service. It was a privilege for me to see him in action around his compound or during his many trips to distant mitaas … people and people’s needs were the centre of his life of prayer and action.

How fitting it was for us that his last story here in Corrandulla just over a week ago was how he managed to transport a donkey from Barbello to Baraka, a seven hour journey! Could St. Paul have described the ordeal better!

Thank you Lord for the feast of Fr. Gerry Foley 26th August, 2021.

Conal Thomas”.

From 2019 Global Teacher of the Year – Br. Peter Mokaya Tabichi:

I interacted with Fr. Gerry for more than a year in Adraa (Uganda) and learned a lot from him. All his stories regarding his great work especially in Kenya inspired me. He was focused, visionary, firm, friendly, compassionate, and had a great passion for what he was doing. May his soul rest in eternal glory.

Peter”.

From Bishop Maurice Muhatia, Bishop of Nakuru:

“I am sorry to learn about the demise of so great an apostle to the people of East Pokot. I pray that the merciful Lord may grant him eternal life and reward him for the great work he did. I will offer mass for him’.
